Relief print, screenprint 2009-12

Process

Woodcuts, collagraphs and screenprints developed from observational drawings of insects.

Research

These pieces were made to support teaching of printmaking techniques, and as practical explorations into changing scale from detailed direct observation drawings to bold mark making, as if looking under magnification. A range of wood types and paper were also investigated.

Sir Malcolm Henry Arnold – after a photograph by Neil Drabble

This woodcut was made as a teaching aid for a woodcut workshop in response to Facing the Music: 20th-Century Portraits of British Composers, The Barber Institute of Fine Arts, Birmingham. The strong contrast of the original black and white photograph by Neil Drabble was my starting point for this woodcut.
